Among the many other things I've done in North Dakota on this trip...

I read the awesomely titled Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: How a Generation of Swashbuckling Jews Carved Out an Empire in the New World in Their Quest for Treasure, Religious Freedom--and Revenge to which I had previously alluded. Unfortunately, the title was pretty clearly the best part of the book. Despite the clearly exhaustive amount of research done by the author (dozens of footnotes per chapter is the norm) and his obvious passion for the topic (he's been researching it for nearly 30 years) I must say that it's a boring, boring read. Caribbean piracy, which should be a very interesting read, is tedious slog. After I while I found myself turning the pages in the vague hope that any book with this good of a title must stop sucking at some point. Alas, I was disappointed. This book sucks. And even worse, it's an utter waste of an awesome thesis and an even more awesome title.

EDIT - Rewritten after LJ swallowed the entire article other than the hyperlink.
