Exciting Ways to Spend Your Sunday Morning

There are lots of great ways to spend your Sunday morning. Here is one I do not recommend.

[1] Smelling gas in your kitchen and basement for the second consecutive day.
[2] Getting the gas company out to check for a leak.
[3] Learning that the gas pipes in the house have so many small leaks in them that the gas company has to turn the gas off.

Why didn't this turn up earlier? Possibly because when the furnace was in full swing it used up enough that the leaks weren't as obvious. Possibly because they put more of the 'stink' in the gas recently. Possibly because a new leak opened up in a place that made it smell more. Who knows?

As it turns out, the plumber we used before and really liked is certified for gas lines. The gas company told me what questions to ask and what answers should be given* and the plumber gave those answers. We figure that with the current warm weather we can make it a day without gas, so they're coming out Monday morning. It'll still be expensive, but on Sundays they charge time and a half, and with no way to tell how long it will take that could be a substantial difference.

Sigh. We didn't need the reserve money in the savings account anyway.

On the bright side, perhaps this explains why our gas bill was so large even after we insulated our attic. I have to admit, I never thought of that as a possibility.

*How to test? 10 ounces of pressure for ten minutes.
