Setting: Snow country, winter

Shelf: Sakumo Hatake (19), Ryuunosuke no Hinote, Iki (13)
Pads: Minato Namikaze (7), Tsunade Senju (19), Yashiro Uchiha (16)

Plot: During a war against Lightning, Yashiro's and Iki's team was sent to Snow country to do some recon on a possible enemy outpost that was being constructed there. Their mission was a failure, leaving them both captured. The Hokage doesn't want to risk Shinobi on a rescue mission, but Sakumo goes save the lost team anyway with the help of Tsunade. In Snow country, Sakumo encounters a young local boy, an orphan, who tries to rob him. Taking pity on the boy and seeing a possible source of information, Sakumo takes him under his wing and "recruits" him into helping on the rescue mission.

Story:

Only the vaguest of impressions insinuated itself into his conscience at first. I'm here, it said, I'm here, I'm here I'm here... Yashiro Uchiha heard its playful singsong and, for a moment, felt as if he were innocent again. He heard it, and felt its tingling insistence grow from a shy little voice in his head into a pressing force that wound itself around his spirit and lifted it, energising his body.

When he woke, it was with a start and a silent scream into the heavens, hands instinctively reaching for his right knee and the painful wound that had roused him from merciful obliviousness. It took a long moment for him to gain enough control over his agony to so much as open his eyes.

He was alone as far as he could see, which admittedly was not much, given that he was curled on his side on the floor, too weak and too pain-ridden to move more than the slightest fraction. He wasn't sure whether he should count his solitude as a blessing or a curse.

The last thing the Konoha genin remembered was being with his four-man team en route to Snow country on a reconnaissance mission. Had they been ambushed? Had he been taken prisoner while the rest of his team escaped? He did not know. He had no memories to explain his current situation, but if that were the case, he hoped someone had made it back home to report. He hoped someone would be able to tell them that he was still there, still alive...

"Hello...? Anyone there...?" he gasped.

----------------

It was cold... Everything was cold. The air was freezing and the stone was like ice. A small, raven-haired boy was sitting in the farthest corner from his cell mate, shivering. His light, white clothes were not match to the extreme cold he was feeling. The boy took a deep breath as some one spoke. The child had never passed out like his cellmate. He couldn't be knocked out... It was one of his many talents. He would lie limp and be unable to move, but he was always aware... always awake. It was a nasty habit of his and one that almost stopped them from passing him. Anything could set off one of his "fits" and the council didn't want to risk it, but the child was no good at medical, Tai or nin jutsu... But he was an expert at Genjutsu, and that made him valuable... And the only reason they bothered training him.

"I-I...I am... he-here..." the boy whispered to his partner. He was shaking, but not entirely out of cold. It was out of fear as well. He didn't want to be here. He wanted to be back in Konoha where he belonged. He wasn't of use to anyone here... Except he was a good interrogator. The Genin closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around his knees. "D-do you... know... w-where we... a-are...?" he asked quietly. Though he knew where they were... they were in enemy territory and they were going to die after they gave the enemy what they wanted.

The sound of footsteps snapped the child. He stood. "Ah, it looks like you have awaken," a man said. His hair was brown and shoulder length, flowing freely. "You two will tell me what I want to know, and then your suffering will end..." He pulled out a Katana. The blade was blood stained and had dragons carved into it and the hilt. The rave-hair's eyes rolled back in his head and he collapsed. Not again! the boy thought desperately. He had a fit. He lay where he fell, limp and unable to move... but still aware... "Anyway," the man muttered. "My name is Ryuunosuke no Hinote and you there," he pointed to the Uchiha, "you will assist in making sure my squad gets what we need..."

Yashiro was shamed to note that the mere act of speaking those few words had taken a lot out of his weakened body. The effort to use those muscles, that had been clenched tight from both pain and the prolonged inertia, exhausted what little control he had gained over himself since waking. His vision blurred and disorientation set in, making him feel like he had just dived into a freezing lake; spikes of pain shot from his leg and ran up his body to attack his head.

The sensation was so overwhelming that he almost missed the reply to his inquiry. And had it been worth it? Definitely not.

He groaned, thinking that he would much rather have been alone with only himself to worry about, whatever the scenario, rather than burdened with the useless kid who had been saddled onto his team as a special favour to some council member or other. He had never really bothered to find out the whole story, taking the appointment of the green genin as an insult. He had been happy to ignore his existence as much as possible while their jounin leader handled the dead weight and kept him out of the others' way.

"Iki...?" Even though he was pretty sure he had recognised the voice, it had been so faint that it wouldn't hurt to check. Maybe the gods would take pity on him. "I have no idea... Where-"

He went silent as he heard footsteps close by. He had wanted to know if Iki could tell him anything, but here was a chance to find out for himself he would not miss. He was able to shift his position so he could see the new arrival, a rather fearsome-looking long-haired man, come closer.

The question of whether he was friend or foe was answered as soon as he started to speak and drew a long blade from its sheath. Yashiro thought he heard some sort of thump coming from the same direction as his team-mate's voice, but he could not be bothered to try and turn that way to check.

Weakened body or not, though, when he heard the man who called himself Ryuunosuke threaten him, that generated a chuckle that evolved into a full-out laugh - perhaps a slightly hysterical one, but he was Uchiha and Uchiha did not bow down to anyone, especially not their enemies:

"Heh... I don't care who you are or what you do. I am Yashiro Uchiha!" he shouted, letting his pain loose, "and you will get nothing from me!"
