Re: Someone is freezing, In The Lake, After Graduation, With a heartbreaking letter, [Genre: Teacher].

Epilogue-compliant but not fully canon-compliant after that. 213 words, angsty

Harry stood at the edge of the Black Lake, toes touching the ice-cold water. The last time he'd been in there, he'd thought Ron was going to be lost to him forever.

This time, he was really lost.

He clutched the letter Hermione had owled him just that morning. Ron had been struck by an unknown curse in the line of duty, and died before they could even get him to St. Mungo’s. Harry couldn't help feeling that maybe it was his fault; he'd stepped down as an Auror when Ginny had accepted first string with the Harpies so he could watch the kids, and taken on the post of Defense teacher at Hogwarts when staying at home proved too maddening. He'd left his best mate in the care of someone else, someone who hadn't spent most of his life with Ron and didn't know his tells, how to warn him of danger or how to move with him to keep them both safe.

It was Harry's fault.

He stepped forward, the water lapping at his ankles, his whole body shivering from the chill.

What would he say to Rose and Hugo? They’d be devastated. Hell, he was devastated, too!

Harry swallowed, dropping the parchment in the lake, watching the ink smear into illegibility.

Maybe if the words weren't there, it wouldn't be true.
