"I'm sorry. They lied."
"What?"
"They said that it mattered and it doesn't. It's NEVER mattered."
"You mean I've spent YEARS worrying and watching my actions and it NEVER mattered?"
"Not to me. I'm sorry, babe. Come here and we'll have a cuddle."

She sat down next to me on the couch and I put my arm around her. Her body slowly unstiffened and her head rested on my shoulder.

"It never mattered?"
"Never."
