My sister on rugby fans

Feb 04, 2010 15:55

Very much looking forward to the start of the Six Nations this weekend.  Am hoping Matthew Tait's second England cap against Wales is greeted in exactly the same way as the first, even if Gavin Henson isn't playing (see here).

My sister has come up with an amazing quote about some of the so-called "rugby fans" we've both encountered during our years living in England (in Wales, if you didn't know, rugby is as popular, if not more, than football):

"...I'm assuming you mean an english type anyway - they barely know who their OWN players are or why 8 people from each side go for some sort of aggressive group hug every so often in a game of rugby/egg chasing so we sadly have to humour them (as much as it pains me)!!!! "

That "aggressive group hug" line made me laugh almost as much as the girl in the pub 2 years ago who asked her boyfriend why the referee kept saying "F*ck" (Ruck)

It may also be the right time of year to resurrect the rugby rules explanation in terms of shopping (for shoes and handbags) and clubbing that I developed for a lesbian friend last year...

rugby, rachel
