Cad Club Dinner

Sep 25, 2006 14:39

This is not, as it might sound, a convention of men who aren't particularly chivalrous in their treatment of women.

Friday night was the dinner for the alumni of Jesus College Boat Club, also known as the Cadwallader Club.  It was held in Hall, which meant a chance to get all nostalgic, and was also time to catch up with some people I haven't seen in ages (along with those I speak to more often, like Mr
appealtoreason)  We had champagne outside first (naturally) and then went into hall where some jovial (mad?) photographers took an overhead shot of us - do we know how/when/where that's going to resurface Edd?  Some kind of alumni publication?

For dinner we had:
Pumpkin and fennel soup
Gruyere and crab tart
Lamb, chateau potatoes (I think) and seasonal veg
Tropical fruit creme brulee (well weird)
Coffee/mints/ port

I happened to be sitting with some  current college members who, like me, were friendly with the serving staff so we got frequent top ups of wine, and also shared those of an abstentious female old member who was, never the less, more than happy to encourage our inebriation.  It was very amusing.  Thanks to Edd, I managed to get most people as drunk as possible with some pennies, and then later we moved on to the bar, where  I had some gin, did some talking (including drunkenly making up with the Captain who binned me from the squad - something along the lines of  "Oh yes, no hard feelings - it did send me to a squad where I got an international gold medal after all" - arrogant, yes, satisfying - even more so!)  Then it was off to Filth, where I talked to more people, and met some interesting randoms at the bar.  All in all, apart from my phone going walkabout, it was a good evening.

NEWSFLASH - the police have found my mobile phone and will be giving it back to me later.  The SIM is already cancelled of course, but since they phoned work, I will at least be able to get all of the numbers off it (even if I have to do it by hand)  and work out what else apart from the message I already know about (if anything) they did.  Will keep the handset as a spare, and still use the new one, because actually the thought of using something someone else had in their possession, even for a ltitle while, is still disturbing.
