"These places give me the creeps. Especially them." Even at his height, Kurdy had to tilt his head back in order to look up into the blank, marble eyes. "It’s like they’re watching, you know? And if you turn your back on them, they’ll move. Maybe grab you and drag you down."
"Angels?" Mister Smith lifted a hand to touch a sun-warmed, ivy-covered wing. "After the Death, I used to sit on their laps. Hide in their arms. Sleep in their shadow. Hoping."
"Hoping for what?"
"That they’d take me with them. Anything would be better than being left behind."
