She would not come near, no matter how much her mother coaxed. These were Strangers (with a capital S) and everybody knew that Strangers were bad. Strangers took things away. Sometimes they did it with loud voices and hurting; other times with soft words and sticky fingers. All they ever gave back was pain and fear.
That's what she knew about Strangers.
So she watched and waited for the big black man with the warm laugh to turn into a monster. Waited for the smaller man with the sad eyes to begin the hurting.
She waited a very long time.
