"Really, Alcmene!" sniffed the baker's wife, raising her voice to be heard over the unseemly gales of boyish laughter. "How do you tolerate it?"
"Whatever do you mean?" asked Alcmene as she set down a plate of olives.
Her guest pointed out the window to the garden and the cloud of dust that followed the two boys wrestling there. "Your son with that ruffian!"
"Oh! I see." Alcmene stepped up to the window. "Hercules!," she called. "Be sure you and Iolaus wash up before lunch."
The look of shocked dismay on her visitor's face almost made her laugh out loud.

It was hard to believe that Iolaus was truly gone. How could he be, when Hercules saw him in so many things?
Every beautiful woman that danced at a festival or waved from a doorway reminded him of Iolaus' affinity for the fairer sex. There wasn't a fishing hole in Greece they hadn't stopped at and the smell of roasted rabbit brought to mind evenings shared around a companionable campfire. He heard Iolaus in the infectious laughter of children and saw him when the stars shone brightest in the night sky.
And missed him, almost more than he could bear.
