Vindication!
After zeroing the free space on my Windows partition (yay SDelete!), I rebooted into Linux and tried to run my backup again. (I forgot to defrag). End result?

Hooray! That's approximately 1.784 hours by the way. Now tomorrow I shall test whether uncompressing and restoring that image will yield a usable Windows install. -___-
And regarding the beta NVidia drivers - I realized that the kernel that came from Amaranth's repository did not support SMP and I have a dual core system. That forum thread with his instructions is about 83 pages long, but if you read through enough of it, you find out that the generic kernel that came with Edgy works just fine with his packaged drivers (a fact which Glyph finds deeply disturbing). So.... great!
