I was having lunch with two of my friends who were also from Columbia College (CC). They were discussing Columbia's Core Curriculum, and the fact that we had to fulfill each requirement. Every single one of them. Well anyway, they were talking and then suddenly one of them said, "I don't understand why CC students have to take sciences."
When someone says something really weirdly ironic because of me, especially at mealtimes, I like to stop and poke at my food just to see if said someone would notice. This time, neither of them did.
The other day, I was having lunch with one of my really close friends from the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and I described the situation to him and he immediately knew what I meant and laughed. "Engineering and Sciences should be in the same school," he remarked.
I was nodding and smiling then, but of course when I turned around and thought about it, I didn't think so at all.
The reason why I went to New York was because CC was... CC. It was because of all these dumb requirements.
And it was when I realised this that I knew I would never criticise the Core Curriculum.
