So I did one of those silly online quizzes to figure out who your ideal candidate would be.
It came up with Mike Gravel, who I never even heard of before, and who seems like a losing proposition. Too bad, cause at least on paper, he seems like my sort of guy- same sex marriage is ok, let's stop demonizing drugs, national healthcare, the environment is a top priority, let's actually teach our kids to read. I'm sure there's a lot of negatives, and to be honest, I haven't been keeping up with all the candidates, but he seems ok, except that he hasn't a chance in hell.
John Edwards, Hilary Clinton, even Barak Obama... these people are going to be pretty middle ground, facing, perhaps, the things I care about, but probably talking around them and not doing much about it. Obama might not be horribly jaded yet, as he has less experience, so I prefer him. He's the most likely to follow what he says.
On the other side... it seems like bad, bad, and worse. Ron Paul gets brought up a lot, but I cannot agree with (or hide my disgust for) a man who considers himself an "unshakable foe of abortion", or who agrees with the Defense of Marriage act. Ick.
I have a feeling I won't get my absentee ballot in time to vote. But I'm pretty displeased with all the top contenders. Surprise surprise- most of them take the middle ground on issues I think demand a stronger stand, like reproductive rights, civil unions/marriage/whatever, and greening our way of life.
The fact our health care system is so fucked is one of the reasons I want to leave the States permanently, and I still might ed up doing that after my associate degree allows me to transfer wherever I want. And I thank my lucky stars I'm earning money here that's worth something.
