Dear Life,
It's been a long time since I directly addressed you. I've felt a letter to you curling in the edges of my brain for a while, but I kept putting off the direct communication. I don't know why. Please don't take it personally. I think I got blocked by a few things, one of which was a heavy, confusing sort of depression where I didn't know I was depressed until I did something really terrible to someone I care deeply about. Since slamming into that moment, I was kind of ignoring you, Life. But then you crept back into my mind, and now everything is clear again. I can't say what has directly compelled me to acknowledge you again, but, here we are, back in our usual pattern. I've missed you.
I was reflecting, Life, on our past year together, and I realized that to some it might seem like something out of a strange movie. So I've decided to make a list--yes! I know! you've missed my lists!--of the past year's exploits and successes and failures...edited of course because if I really went into EVERYthing, I'd never stop.
1. Well, I graduated college. I didn't think much about it until recently, when I had to finally accept that it was a huge change for me to go from a full-time student to a full-time employee. The growing pains of that transition weren't apparently until recently.
2. I was also the commencement speaker for graduation. That was strange. I didn't really think much about that until it was happening either--like until they announced my name to step up to the podium and begin speaking. Then I really realized it.
3. I joined the Ultimate Frisbee Summer League, and was in the best shape of my life. It was amazing.
4. I then tore my ACL midway through our season, disabling me for the summer, ending my summer league career, and taking away my carless ability to get around anywhere on my own.
5. I did however (once off the drugs) take that time to start really working my freelance jobs--and they exploded in those four months.
6. One of which turned into the full-time job I have now.
7. I recovered faster than most folks from my knee tearing, and biked sooner than others, and then ran sooner than others.
8. In collaboration with a friend and the original organizer, I produced the Femme Show in Portland.
9. I worked together with a group of folks to start an art collective--which then burned and died a fiery burning death.
10. I started a Portland, Maine Dr. Sketchy's.
11. I bought a car... (!)
12. My beautiful bike I built, Frankie, was stolen.
13. I built another bike, The Pheonix, and she is in her final creation phase.
I'm sure, Life, that there are much much more things to list. However, I am sitting at work, and now need to go back to it if I intend on leaving to actually finish The Phoenix, I must end this letter. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you soon.
So glad to get our relationship back on track,
Sincerely,
xoxoxo
Katie
