home sweet home

Back from the camping trip. Great fun was had by all. We left Tuesday night, stayed over in Red Deer at Mario's parents' for the night, and then headed out again Wednesday morning. Mario's dad served me at least five home-made moose sausages and about half a pot of coffee. It was a good morning for me. ^^

We stopped at Rocky Mountain House for alcohol. I think we got two fifteen-packs of MGD, and then Mario got another fifteen pack of AGD. At the time, this seemed like plenty enough for five. The mind works differently when one is sober.

We went to Abraham Lake, a man-made lake nestled in the Rockies somewhere between Rocky Mountain House and Banff Nat'l Park. It was a free camping area, unmarked on the road except by an easily missed, narrow dirt turn-off.

We set up camp and hiked a bit around the area, then napped on the rocky beach, taking in some rays (speaking of rays, my arms and legs are a lobster red right now-- if I had some butter to baste myself with, I think I'd look mighty tasty...)

As Wednesday wore on, we settled down around a fire and began with the drinking and the relaxing. We roasted wieners and marshmallows, and enjoyed a mild, intoxicating summer evening. We ran out of beer before all was said and done (I think I had eight or ten, but that's a rough estimate with the math, since I didn't keep count), but by that point we were all nicely hammered.

I had one small camping mishap when I woke up in the middle of the night and went out to answer a call of nature. Without glasses or flashlight. I felt my way to a tree that, in my head, was about thirty feet in front and to the left of the tents. After finishing my business, I turned around only to realize I couldn't see a thing. So I felt my way to where I thought the tent was. But it wasn't. So I felt around for maybe five minutes before my eyes adjusted enough to vaguely make out the shape of the tents... And somehow, I was facing the back of the tents. How did that happen?

This morning dawned cold and overcast. I didn't sleep well, so I was up at six. I washed the beer smell from myself and built myself a merry little fire. A big crow (probably the same one that had kept me from sleeping) came to visit me, and was kind enough to allow me to get some pictures. I ended up falling asleep trying to read. The rest of the crew only got up at about 9:00, at which point the sky was starting to clear up again.

Anyway. That was my trip. The drive back was mostly uneventful. I dozed most of the way. I got home and pretty much passed out on the couch after taking a shower, more from the heat than from anything else, I think. We really couldn't have asked for better weather.

And that is that. Here's a link if you'd like to see my pictures of the trip: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bedwyr/sets/72157594182107219/
