Everyone has a guru to look up to or aspire to be. for some its a sports star because of their courage and for others it’s a religious leader because of their vision. For me it’s a writer and actor who was incredibly diverse. This man is WIlliam Shakespeare. He wrote plays and poems that are still read and performed today, performed his plays for kings and queens of the time, acted in his own plays, and was also a successful businessman of his time. He wrote 37 plays, mostly comedies, also tragedies and histories. He managed the playhouse The Globe Theater and his acting troop at the same time. I respect him because of his multiple talents and ability to be like a chameleon in the world of theater.
I have always thought that humor and laughter could solve almost any problem that a person is facing. William Shakespeare proved this through his amazing comedies. No matter how serious the situation is for the characters at the beginning, by the end they are happy. His comedies also brought people together of all classes and all walks of life to one place, at the playhouse. Like his plays and the way he ran the Globe I bring many types of people together through my humor and good nature: everyone from the most hardened jock to the most flamboyant artist and help them, by acting as a kind of conduit, to find something in common.
I also think that Shakespeare and I would agree that romance is something to take very seriously. Shakespeare was a very romantic person. In his many plays, whether it is a comedy like “Midsummer Nights Dream” or a tragedy like “Hamlet” there is always a theme of love in his plays. Romance is a big influence in all his character’s lives, and can bring out the best or the worst. In “Hamlet” Prince Hamlet saw his mother as fickle and the harm it caused. I can’t stand seeing the young people around me going in and out of what they call love. But In A Midsummer’s Night Dream the betrothals of Lysander and Hermia, Demetrius and Helena manage to solve the long feud between Oberon and Titania. Although high school romance is fickle and short lived, love can still do great things.
As I said, it is his diversity as a person that inspires me the most. Like William Shakespeare I have become a multitalented person. Shakespeare had talent in writing, acting, and business. I have talent in other areas. For the first part of my life, till I was about 13 I danced. I trained and performed in tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, modern, and then I even flirted with other styles like salsa. I have trained my voice with several years of voice lessons. I have been involved in several different types of shows from small black box theater, improv, dramas and musicals. I have taught as the assistant to the theater teacher in my high school and ran auditions in one of her classes, for “Competition Piece.” And the things I’ve developed my talent for goes on outside of performing. I have been on three wilderness canoeing expeditions and am an excellent canoeist. And maybe the most unusual talent that I am proud of is being a strong family member.
I’d like to do one thing differently than WS. He didn’t go to college, and I plan to. And I’d like to do one thing the same. Unlike most artists, he died a wealthy man. That wouldn’t be bad.
