[PIMP POST] Tourai (トゥライ) / minato / Ryuusei-P (流星P)

Mar 14, 2011 00:55

I've been meaning to do this in awhile now, but having been away from utattemita/utaite fandom for so long, I had to re-institute myself and relearn a lot of stuff since the fandom has grown soooooo huge this past year or so.

Just to start off, Tourai (トゥライ) is an amateur nico nico douga singer (also known as 'utattemita' and you can find out more here). I've also seen people call him Tolie or Tulay. He also goes by minato or ryuusei-P (流星P), when he is producing vocaloid music and performing in live concerts as a keyboardist. He is my first encounter with utattemita and my absolute favourite, even as the community of utaites have expanded over the years, and hopefully I'll be able to have him introduce new people into the fandom as he did with me.

As a producer...

Under minato/ryuusei-P, he has created several works using the vocaloid synthesizers that are fairly influential to the vocaloid fandom and the utaite fandom. One of them, the one song that pulled me into vocaloid fandom, is SPICE!. It is synthesized using Kagamine Len's voice track, and probably one of the sexiest depictions of Len out there:

And if I talk about SPICE!, I can't avoid talking about RIP=RELEASE. Synthesized under Megurine Luka's voice track, this is seen as a response song to SPICE! and its underlying story. I don't particularly have an attachment to the song, but I generally do like Luka's voice track because it's less choppy (since it's "newer" anyway):

Soar, synthesized with Hatsune Miku's vocals, is not as popular but it's still one of my favourites. Maybe because I just loveeee my upbeat songs a lot? Hahaha. Well, here it is:

And then of course, if we talk about minato/ryuusei-P and not talk about Magnet, I haven't talked about him at all! Magnet is one of minato's most popular works both in the vocaloid and utattemita fandom. Many utaites have sang this song one way or another. Any anime convention goers? Ever seen two cosplayers with butterfly headsets on them? That's Magnet. It was originally synthesized under Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka, but now it has taken many forms with other voice tracks as well. It is a beautiful song, but I sometimes wonder what kind of person he is... I mean, there's SPICE! which is about a boy going around having sex with anyone and everyone (well, basically). And then there's Magnet:

(do check his mylist on NND for a complete list of his work, if you have a login to NND!)

As a singer & the origins of his name...

First off, I just want to say again that I love his voice more than any other utaites out there. He is able to cover a wide range and types of songs, flawlessly. A lot of people describe his voice as being sexy (you can read the youtube comments about that lol). It is also very rich and strong, and for the most part pretty deep. Unlike Gero and Faneru (other utaites that I highly recommend checking out!) though, Tourai doesn't combine parodies with his performances and sticks mainly on a serious route. Either way, I love him~

His name 'Tourai' had actually originated from a pronunciation he made singing Black Rock Shooter. It's at 2:50 mins of the video posted below. Instead of 'tsurai', he pronounced 'tourai' and many viewers on NND commented on the mistake (if you frequent NND, you'll know that viewer's comments scroll across the video). Since then, he's used Tourai as his singer alias on NND:

Hikyou Sentai Urotander is actually the first song Tourai ever sang. He had posted it under the alias of ryuusei-P. When I first heard it, I was in absolute denial because he had changed his voice to sing the song. I cant find a video of it on youtube to embed it, but you can listen/watch/download it on nicosound if you're curious to compare his voice there and his normal voice. IT'S MINDBLOWING.

Roshin Yuukai Meltdown (or just Meltdown) is one of my absolute favourite Tourai covers, and it was my first time hearing him sing after I found out Tourai and minato were the same person. One thing I really love about Tourai is he maintains his own style of singing but matching how the song originally sounds. I do think this is probably one of the best versions of Meltdown you'll ever hear. Oh, and his high pitch scream is just ♥♥♥:

Piano x Forte x Scandal made me realize how much I love the way he pronounces the syllables in his covers. Another super amazing cover by Tourai. Not my favourite, but I like it:

From Y to Y is one of my favourite ballad covers by Tourai. I actually disliked this song prior to encountering Tourai's cover. He made me like the song:

I wanted to show you Tourai's version of Just Be Friends, but I think it is only released in mp3. :( Oh well. It's a great song though, do check it out!

Since I ended the last section with Magnet, I will also end this section with his solo cover of Magnet. Tourai covered it to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the song, doing both Miku and Luka's parts by himself. WHY IS THIS MAN'S VOICE SO BEAUTIFUL?!?!

Notable Collaborations

Usa & UsaColony → His most notable collaboration(s) is with Usa (aka Hana), another popular utattemita and another one of my biases who has gone professional just recently. They are know as UsaTolie (憂辛), and one of their most notable collabs was Cendrillon. Tourai eventually joins up with Usa and her collaboration with Yamai (aka KANAN) called UsaColony, where he first started off as their producer but eventually started to record with Usa & Yamai. They also did weekly radio shows up until the end of 2009, but I never catch the ones with Tourai in them... D: UsaColony has 3 mini-albums, 2 of which has Tourai's participation. Here's UsaTolie's cover of Cendrillon:

Asamack (Asamaru & Jack) → His friendship with Asamaru (あさまる) and Jack (じゃっく) is extremely flail-worthy. Asamaru (or Marutan, as Jack calls him) and Jack are a duo called Asamack (あさまっく). Unfortunately, Tourai has never officially collaborated with Asamack per se, but he has performed with both Asamaru and Jack individually. Most notable for me is Tourai and Jack (with Jigiru, and "abuse from Choucho" lol) covering Fullchin Boogie. This song is the silliest you'll see of Tourai, unfortunately. But even though they've never covered a song together, Tourai sometimes appear on Asamack's live shows on nico nico douga. They've done things ranging from playing tetris to phoning up Tourai while karaoke-ing and forcing him to sing Magnet over the phone to voice acting Starry☆Sky ~in winter~ in those lives. Yeah, I know lol. I unfortunately never caught them in the act, but apparently Tourai really sucks at gaming... which you can actually find a video of in the Asamack community (not tetris though). Here's Tourai and Jack covering Fullchin Boogie (btw, 'fullchin' = no pants):

Valshe → Valshe (バルシェ) is an extremely popular female utaite with very strong, guy-ish vocals. This explains why she is now taking a profesional singing career, and had Tourai help her produce songs for an entire mini-album of hers. They have never sung a duet together, but I know a lot of fans want this to happen. I am not particular a Valshe bias, but I do love her vocals and I would love a Tourai & Valshe collaboration. Also, it seems that Valshe also games with Asamaru, Jack and Tourai and have once done voice acting live with them. She is extremely cool, quite literally so.

Conclusion: "How does he look like?"

Unfortunately for you, I have no precise answer to that question. This is a guy who will torture you by only having his body filmed (NOT IN A EROTIC WAY, OKAY) and whistling Magnet (re: UsaColony community) or allow his only his hand to be taken a photo of (re: Jack's twitpic account). However, other than the utaites themselves who hang out with Tourai, there are vocaloid fans who have seen Tourai as minato(流星P), whether they know it or not.

By that, I am referring to the 39's Giving Day (ミクの日感謝祭) concert in Japan. This concert is basically aimed towards vocaloid fans, with 3D projections of the vocaloid mascots singing to popular vocaloid synthesized songs. Tourai, under his alias minato(流星P), was the keyboardist of the concert.

Fortunately, this concert came out on DVD. Unfortunately, the only time the camera focuses on him, A HUGE ASS CREDITS TEXT COVERS HIS FACE. I'm serious here. I'll show you:

(scroll to around 0:26 when the camera focuses on the group to the right of the stage - Tourai is the 4th person from the left)

Well, at least now you can tell people that you've saw him. Somewhat, anyway. lol.

(thanks to hananatan and sugarcrackers from tumblr for pointing it out to me! ^ㅂ^)

I hope you like the post and consider investing some time in this fandom if you haven't already. ( ゚ヮ゚) I really think these people deserve a chance to make it big, much more so than a lot of people in jpop who are already popular... ( ̄ー ̄)
