Transmutation Interlude 12 - RL Hospital Log PPTH

Jul 02, 2010 23:25

Edward started off asleep. He's unconscious, on his back, an IV draining into his arm. He's wearing blue hospital scrubs because his clothes are trashed. On the table beside his bed, where there is a water pitcher and a glass for him, as well as a remote, are his personal effects. One state alchemist watch, a set of six earrings and a small repair ( Read more... )

Naoto was reminded of another blond young man who had a penchant for getting himself seriously injured while she waited for news of Edward's condition. She sat there, nursing a cup of coffee, and wishing desperately for something a little stronger... something to help calm her nerves.

She waited the long hours in the uncomfortable plastic chairs in the waiting room. Finally, it was her turn to see him.

She padded softly into the room, her cabbie hat held in both hands.

"Hello, Edward." She forced a smile. "How are you feeling?"

"Hi Naoto." Edward said. Despite his looks, the fact he was stable, he still sounded like he was injured. At least he was stable.

"I'm alright." He said and gave a weak smile. "Could...go for lunch, right?"

A small laugh slipped out of her. Edward had very nearly had a brush with death not six hours ago... and he was already talking about food. Frankly, Naoto was surprised to see him conscious. He really was made of sterner stuff than she had imagined...

"I'm afraid you're probably going to be on a mostly liquid diet for the next few days," she said, taking a seat in a nearby chair. She set her hat on her lap and reached for Edward's left hand. "But I promise to treat you to Aiya's, once you're well enough."

"Look forward to it." Edward said with a small smile.

He held onto her hand and made an attempt to squeeze it. It was feeble, his usual strength sapped. It would take awhile to get his strength back. "Win was here..." He coughed. "They're okay."

His feeble grip was indicative of his current condition. Naoto gently squeezed back, hoping that he would derive some small reassurance from the gesture.

"I know. I brought them. I figured you wanted to see them first thing. After all, I can't think of anyone else who would qualify as 'immediate family'."

Which was true, in Alphonse's case. He was related to Edward by blood (despite the lack of blood in his new form), and Winry was practically their sister...

"I've talked to the doctor. He said your condition was stable, but I don't think you're going to leave here any earlier than four days... if you're lucky."

"I broke my promise...made her cry."

Edward complained a little but he held onto Naoto, letting out a sigh. "Didn't lose her earrings though. I'm glad for that."

Her expression softened. He was going to carry that guilt with him, no matter what she said. Even so...

"It's not your fault. You can't... control emotions that easily..."

She glanced toward the pile of earrings on the bedside table.

"Did you make those for her?"

"No actually. Al and I bought those for her when we started journeying...we brought her a pair and she put them on right away. He brought her another and she just added them to her ears and at the last set we told her she didn't have to wear them all at once but..." Ed smiled. "Incorrigible. Then I stopped buying her earrings."

"I think it's kind of cute, to be perfectly honest," Naoto chuckled. "That sounds like something Kanji would do..."

As it was, Kanji was also waiting his turn to see Edward.

"You know... I've been thinking about getting another set of piercings." She placed one finger behind her ear, showcasing the steel earrings that Edward had made for her. "Just above the ones I have now. What do you think? Would it look good on me?"

"You're still wearing them!" Ed exclaimed, delighted. One could see it in his eyes, he smiled beneath the mask.

"It'd look good on you if you want them. Winry has them four and two. Looks good on her, I think." Talking was making him cough a little but he wasn't going to stop.

Ah, that smile. It warmed her heart. Edward's childlike exclamation was a sign that perhaps he hadn't been completely broken by Kimbley's threats. She could hope for that much, at least.

"Of course I'm still wearing them. You made them for me, didn't you?"

She nodded, smiling at his enthusiasm. It made her even more confident in her decision. But the smile faded a bit when Edward began to cough.

"Do you want me to get you a drink of water?"

"Yeah. I'm glad you like them." Edward answered but he shook his head to the water. "If I was to guess...I'd say I cracked my ribs too. Lot of...lot of stories to a mine shaft." He frowned a little. "Can't feel anything though, so I can't say for sure."

"I made a few for Winry, too. I've been working on quite a few pieces of jewelry for my friends... Even you." She flushed a bit. "Though I'm not certain if you wear anything like that."

Her brows furrowed a bit as she took in Edward's current condition. He was hooked up to an IV solution, full of painkillers. She wouldn't be surprised if he ended up falling asleep in the middle of their conversation. It had happened to her a few times before.

"You did. That's going to take at least a month to heal completely. Once you're out of the hospital, you'll need to spend some time convalescing before you get back on the road again."

"I can probably guess what's wrong with me. I've...fallen a lot. I'm good at this." Edward murmured thoughtfully.

"I'm sure I can do this in a week. I'll be fine by then. You'll see. Just...it's just a scratch. And cracked ribs are nothing."

He was being infuriatingly flippant. Confident in his own invulnerability. Such was the folly of youth.

Naoto's lips thinned to a severe line. "I'm not going to let you charge back into the fray until you've made a full recovery, and a week is certainly not enough time for that."

"You'll see, I can do it..." Ed rasped a little, frowning. "Can't give up on that."

It's not just flippancy. Admitting weakness is not Ed's strong point and being weak, falling down and staying down might mean the end to everything.
