Not The Target Demographic

Lately I've been ruminating on why I care so little for most popular culture. I don't go to movies, I don't follow a lot of webcomics/commentaries, I haven't watched television except when unavoidable for over 30 years and I've generally evaded a lot of common cultural experiences. Most of what I know is from reading, hearing what my friends are doing and watching the occasional Youtube video. I am not unaware of popular culture but it's hard to care. I finally figured out why; it's not about me.
"Me" in this context refers to the "me" of my particular demographic position as opposed to the personal "me". Most of the content I have avoided is directed at audiences I overlap but don't identify with. I don't care because I can't relate to what's happening. I have oftentimes a good intellectual understanding of the events transpiring but not a "gut" or instinctive identification. It's enlightening. I can stop finding a lot of things annoying or offensive because it's literally not directed my way. I'm sort of the collateral damage statistic of "targeted" advertising and demographic assumptions. Now if only I could convince all of this content providers to leave me alone. . .
