CHM: Annyeong Haseyo!

Sep 16, 2010 00:55

Got married and honeymooned already, settled into a new house, all my bands dissolved or went on indefinite hiatus... What's a boy to do? Oh right, throw some more Stepmania tracks into the void! Those of you unfamiliar with contemporary Korean music should take heed. I've tried to represent numerous styles here (although K-Pop junkies will never forgive me for the lack of DBSK), so you should download the seven track pack just to listen to, even if you don't use the Steps. And if you have any questions, comments, or requests, you (should) know how to contact me. I suppose I ought to put up a website one of these days....

Black Diamond (edit)
- t
Also known as "Tasha" and probably a million other names, Yoon Mi Rae is arguably the queen of Korean R&B. She's also married to Tiger JK from veteran Korean hip-hop group Drunken Tiger, and their kid is so cute.

Dash Girl (edit)
- Yoon Eun Hye
No, Yoon Eun Hye is not related to Yoon Mi Rae (there are maybe, what, fifteen surnames in Korea?). She's a pretty well-known Korean television actress, currently playing the lead in "My Fair Lady", on whose soundtrack this poppy electro piece resides. I first saw her on the hilarious variety show X-Men back when she was too young to be attractive but was funny and strong. Now she's absolutely gorgeous. Not sure if she kept up the freakish strength.

Energy (edit)
- Mighty Mouth featuring Sun Ye
A fun hip-hop-pop track from some clean cut kids. The charts will be full of songs like this, and ballads.

Mother Earth (edit)
- Kim Kyung Ho
Kim Kyung Ho is metal. This is a Korean-language cover of "Mother Earth" by Within Temptation. I think it's better than the original because every time there's no singing, there's wailing over-the-top guitar licks instead. I'm a sucker for cheese like that.

When You Have To (edit)
- e.via featuring YEYO
e.via raps fast. This edit doesn't include the part of the song where it speeds up, but know that the full version of the song (and most of her other songs, too) does. Outsider also does some unbelievably fast stuff, but this is more electro. One thing to note: e.via can be dirty sometimes. But that's hip-hop for you.

Wind Beneath My Wings (edit)
- Cherry Filter
I threw another cover in here just so you wouldn't be all "Aah too much Korean! Can't Process!" Cherry Filter rock so hard, they can make Bette Midler sound awesome.

You (edit)
- Casker
Casker is the interesting electronicy version of lounge jazz. That makes them sound awful, but actually I am aful and they are really good. Some of their stuff is all fun accordian in the manner of Pink Martini, but this is straight up electronic and it's great.
