WCW Blogs - The All Nighter Edition

Before I start, congrats go out to my friends Jesse and Emily and that Phil is slacking a little bit (but we all know in the next six months he's going to out Punk, Punk in dating)

So in 1994, TBS and WCW had this great idea that they would show six hours of old wrestling matches while current on-air personalities would have a pajama party at a hotel. Despite that sounding a bit gay (not that there is anything wrong with that), it was a great concept. The people at this "party" were Tony Shiavonni, Eric Bischoff, Gene Okerlund, Bobby Heenen, Chris Cruise, and Gordon Solie. They all watched classic WCW matches and it was fun. They did another one about a year later that I'm hoping to find my copy of. The following matches were the 90s matches that were featured on the show that were in the top 201 WCW matches of the 90s

#143 : Ricky Steamboat/Shane Douglas vs. Hollywood Blondes - Clash XXII (1/13/93 - Tag Titles) - This was the first match between the two teams. It was also one of the very first instances were Pillman and Austin teamed up. They didn't have their matching gear or anything yet but you could tell right away they were something special together. The basics of the match were to introduce, so to speak, the team of Austin and Pillman to the crowd. Steamboat and Douglas are over (Steamboat more than Douglas obviously) so they are natural foils for the two heels. It was just a great tag match that had a hot finish. Steve Austin used the belts to get DQd but it led to them just beating the crap out of Douglas and Steamboat. The Blonds never looked back and later became the tag team champions.

#154: Steve Austin vs. Brian Pillman - Clash XXV (11/10/93)- Despite it being a really great match, it's also incredibly depressing.  Just when the Blonds were taking off and well on their way to legendary status, WCW gets cold feet because they didn't get a monster rating with the returning Flair at a previous Clash.  So they split them up and put Austin with Col. Robert Parker and put Pillman back as a babyface.  The other annoying side effect was it gave Paul Roma a tag title reign as a horsemen.  Who is the idiot behind that one?  As far as the match goes, it's pretty good with Jesse Ventura selling the idea that these two should be fighting together instead of fighting each other.

#119: Cactus Jack vs. Van Hammer - Clash XVIII (1/21/92 - Fall Count Anywhere) - This match came out of one of my favorite clashes ever.  The funny thing is, it's not even the best match on the show yet it's the only match on the Top 201 of the 90s.  It's definately the most memorable and that is why it's on the list.  Cactus Jack takes three of the sickest bumps in his career.  The worst is probably the missed susnet flip to the floor where he lands on the concrete without having touched Van Hammer.  The ending is also fun because they involve Missy Hyatt getting wet (in the sense that she is in water, not that usual Hyatt way).

#50: Ricky Steamboat/Dustin Rhodes vs. Arn Anderson/Larry Zbysko - Clash XVII (11/19/91 - Tag Titles) - You know how in wrestling msytery partners never live up to their billing.  To say this one does is an understatement.  Because the internet wasn't really around as we know it today, nobody knew that Steamboat had recently left WWF again.  The pop that the crowd gave Steamboat when they revealed him to be the myster partner was almost Hogan like.  What followed was definately not Hogan like.  This is one of the best tag title matches in WCW history because of the crowd heat, the whining done by Anderson and Zybysko and Dustin was severly underrated.  One of my absolute favorite matches of all time and highly recommended.

Thanks for reading.
