I got an out-of-the-blue e-mail from Chris Howland, senior editor at America's Civil War, on Tuesday:
>Hi Chris,
>
>Is there any way you or your publisher could send us fairly quickly an
>advance reading copy of the "Seizing Destiny" book you're working on with
>Albert Connor? I'd like to consider it for a possible excerpt for
>America's Civil War, but I haven't seen anything come into our office yet.
>I just stumbled across it on Amazon, seeing it's due out October 1. I'd
>love to read it. Time's an issue, though, so please let me know as soon as
>possible.
The thing is, though, that I don't really have the book finished yet (it's set for a December release). After some shuffling with Ted and Sarah today, I was able to pull together an excerpt from the first chapter, which I sent along to Chris. Seems that he liked it enough that he's going to use it for his cover story. "We were making alternative plans, but 'Destiny' would be much better if we can pull it off," he told Sarah. "We ship this issue two weeks from today, so every second is critical. This even affects our cover because we'd like to have Hooker on there."
When the dust settled, he sent me the following note, which was nice to hear:
"Thanks so much, Chris. I really appreciate you doing this. This is very
interesting material that reads quite well. One aside: We'll have to use
Burnside on the cover and not Hooker, as we had planned, because this
doesn't touch on Hooker's role yet. But that's OK?"
