Impromptu Speech

A reasonable approximation of what I said tonight, off the cuff, to students at the JMC Honors Dinner:

We talk a lot about all the years of professional experience we have here in JMC. Well, as some of you know, I went back to school last spring. For my mid-life crisis, I decided to get my Ph.D. I've started to wonder whether I should have, instead, gotten something with two front seats, no back seat, a convertible top...especially considering all the time I spend on the road these days, going back and forth to Binghamton. But, I'm doing the Ph.D.

So, for the first time in years, I've been able to be a student again. So, forget all that "professional experience" for a second. Now I'm getting the student experience, and I'm bringing that to the classroom.

And I love being in the classroom. I love what I do, love the exciting ways all y'all feed my brain every day. But now I get to be you in a very real way. And that's been good for me. It's been a good reminder of what y'all have to go through every day, what y'all have to do to "make it happen."

I just want you to know I appreciate that. I appreciate what you have to do to make it happen, and I wanted to say thank you.

Good luck.

grad school, bonas
