Yesterday I went to go look at the house I'm going to be living in next year. At first I wasn't so impressed, but I think with a little work it could be pretty nice. Despite the fact that it is really far away, it's still going to be awesome.
I went to lunch at Panera with Carrie and Ox after, which was fun, and then came back and put in a movie. I got a feeling that I wanted to do something really cool around 3:30/4:00, so I hopped online and checked out the symphony website. I didn't know what they were playing or anything, I was just curious. Turns out they were playing The Planets, which I had wanted to see for a long time. I called Heinz Hall and asked about tickets, and the woman told me just to go to the student/senior rush at 6:00. So I made a few phone calls, checked the bus schedule, and then threw on some symphony-appropriate clothing.
Renee and I picked up the bus on Fifth and Atwood and headed downtown. We got there a little early so we took a quick stroll through the Cultural District. We got to the rush right at 6, and it worked out well. It's for students and seniors, and we were behind a few people who were clearly not students. Old people are really picky about where the sit. So we got to the window, the lady asked if we wanted upstairs or downstairs (we wanted upstairs, of course) and we got out tickets. The rush is an awesome deal, our seats were in the $45 section (Family Circle, three rows back) and we only paid $14 each.
The first piece was good, but not really my style. It was a concerto for violin and orchestra, so there was one violin player standing by himself playing ridiculous stuff the whole time. The first movement was good, the second was boring, and so was the thrid until the end. It was scored well and played well, just not something I would listen to on my own time.
The Planets was amazing. It starts with Mars (war) and then goes to Venus (peace). Earth = stuck in the middle. Then Mercury (winged messenger) shows us Jollity (Jupiter), Old Age (Saturn), magic (Uranus) and mysticism (Neptune). It's an awesome piece. Mars, Jupiter, and Uranus were by far the best movements. Absolutely outstanding. Opening with Mars (I know most of you know it) is just the coolest thing to hear. I'm so glad I went. Renee and I decided collectively that we both needed it. It's nice to feel cultured every now and then.
In other news, finals are this week. I'm going to be home from Wednesday night to Friday morning, then I'll be back for the day Saturday and I'm off to Cedar Point on Sunday. I'm a little busy. Thursday I imaging I will be studying all day, even though I'm going to be at home. I have my American Political Process final on Friday, and I've got a ton of work to do before I take it. Physics is on Tuesday, and all day today and tomorrow I'll be studying that and Social Psych, which is on Wednesday.
For now, I'm going to take a shower and head upstairs for an awesome lunch.
