Well, it's that time again where I have three hours of commuting to do each day, and in that blessed window of time before the motion sickness sets in, I can knock back a book or two each week. So, I thought I would dedicate an entry entirely to books I have read, want to read, as well as ask (beg) for recommendations. Oh how I love reading.
First, I present my list of books from last year.
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka I had assumed that this would be a funny, cute book, but in reality it was depressing in parts and somewhat boring in others. Don't judge a book by its title, though I own it so if you care to borrow it I am happy to lend it to you. It isn't bad, it was just a lot different than I expected.
I'm With Stupid by Gene Weingarten and Gina Barreca If anyone knows where I can find this, will you please let me know? I am starting to wonder if it is a total flop, because I can't seem to find it anywhere (other than online).
Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them by Al Franken
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold I think this book may be written more for teenagers (not sure), but I definitely enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it to anybody, I found it really thought provoking (if a little depressing).
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
White Oleander by Janet Fitch
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Washingtonienne by Jessica Cutler Why is my experience in DC not this interesting? Read the blog, the book is a clumsy attempt to raise the blog from blog status to book status and loses a lot of the shock value and intrigue that the blog has.
http://washingtoniennearchive.blogspot.com/2004/05/i-have-glamour-job-on-hill.html America by John Stewart
Now, a few books that I read in the past year that I recommend to you.
I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe
Prep by Curtis Sittenfield
The Catcher in the Rye bye J.D. Salinger
Do not read the above three all at once, it will depress you a lot as they are all about teenagers coming of age in a negative way.
Maybe a Miracle by Brian Strause
Big Trouble by Dave Barry
A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
The Unquiet Earth by Denise Giardina
anything by Barbara Kingsolver, especially The Prodigal Summer, The Poisonwood Bible, The Bean Trees, and Animal Dreams
Finally, if you have any recommendations for me, let me know. And don't name books you've already recommended. Because either I am going to read them, have read them, started reading them and didn't like them, or have no intention of reading them whatsoever.
And I'm spent.
