- the mainland; a mall - sunday evening - 09/06 -

Sep 06, 2009 21:09

After a trip to T&C, the girls headed out to the Causeway to pick up a taxi. That brought them to the mall, which the cabbie informed them was only a open for another couple of hours.

That was why Fiona pulled Dinah in quickly.

"Shoes or clothes first?"

[for the girl, obviously ^_^]

"Shoes!" Dinah grinned, and started stalking toward the nearest Shoe Warehouse. "I want heels. Another two inches of height, at least. I need to feel tall."

"I know what you mean," she had to admit, "though heels always make me walk funny."

"They're supposed to, kinda. They just have to be wide enough to give support too. And function as a weapons," Dinah said, flashing her a grin. "Okay. Okay." She looked around from the front door, and headed over to the boots section. "Or I could get boots." Which to her, were work shoes. On the other hand, given questions Cal had asked about leather at one point? Every advantage was good.

"Boots are my favorite," she said with a little smile.

"I always feel more capable in boots."

"Yeaaah," Dinah admitted, kicking off her own shoes. "Me too." She tried on a pair that would look good with her black slacks, and said, "If you were a guy trying to embarrass me, or get me to blush, would this convinced you that it was less possible?"

"They make me think of my Mother."

Which was a 'hell yes.' No one made her mother blush. Maybe her father could, if they were in the same room for long enough. But if they were in the same room for long enough, Fiona was reasonably sure that it wouldn't survive long.

"Yes."

Dinah looked skeptical after the first statement, then hopeful. "Okay. Good. Yay. You should get some," she added, sitting down to unbuckle hers. "Boots, I mean. Not ones that make you think of your mom, though! Maybe more like your Aunt Dallas," she added, mischievous.

She grinned as she looked at a few of the other boots.

"I have a lot of issues with my mother. But when I think of someone capable, someone you don't mess with, someone who can do anything, it's still my mother."

Her lips twitched as she shrugged.

"Dress up in clothes she likes, flannel and boots and trousers, when I'm freaked."

"Really? Death likes flannel?" Dinah tried to picture this, and totally failed. She held out the boot to consider it, and admitted, "These make me think of Helena. She wears ones like this a lot. But she's nobody's mom." She looked back at Fiona. "You're not getting freaked as much any more. Are you? Aside from being a cat."

"Not so much. But like, with the alligators? That kind of thing. But I like the boots."

Wow, no transition sentence, Fiona.

Dinah gave her a bewildered look. "I think I got that? Maybe. The alligator freaked you, 'cause of your friend... you lost me on the boots." She picked up a heel, and gave it a very speculative look. "These heels would make me look like a hooker, I think."

She meddled with her hair while she tried to make it make sense.

"The alligator thing freaked me because I don't like to kill things. Anything. And cause of Souhk. But I meant I liked those boots. You're right about the heels, though."

Dinah grinned. "Ah. Gotcha." She put the heels down and patted the boots she'd found possessively. "You're not a new kid at all, any more. You got through two invasions and two summer sessions. I'm glad you're getting used to the place." She stood up, and said, "More shoes, or clothes now?"

"It's up to you. I think you're set for shoes, though."

"Yup!" Dinah picked up the box, and grinned at Fiona. "We should get dresses for Homecoming. I know it's a month away, but..."

"...um, I'm not going home for a while. And why would I need a dress to do it?"

This was another of those 'never went to school' things she was clueless about.
