I have always, always, always wanted to write a character with an ethical code that stated he could never hurt someone in anyway without first feeling what it was like himself. I think I could totally try this out in fanfic with Cutler Beckett.
Also, apparenrly Mercer's first name is Ian. I don't like that. I'll keep my Mercer "David" thankyouverymuch.
