Eek...awkward

Ok, so there was this girl named, Erica that I knew in 8th grade middle school, which was a half decade ago and she works at this calendar store at the mall. I saw her a week or so ago when I was shopping with my mom and I said, "That's Erica Eaton." and she said, "No, it's not, she's big!" (Erica was bulimic in middle school). I said, "Yes, that is her but let's go, I don't want her to see me." See, Erica and I had a fight in 8th grade that just ended our "friendship" or whatever. She only came to my house once. My mom, being the overly friendly person that she is saw her tonight when she was shopping for a gift for our neighbor. She went to the calendar store and while she was ringing up she said, "You went to school with my daughter, Julie Houlihan." as soon as my mom said that, Erica went, "Oh yeah!" and they small-talked and then before my mom left, Erica wrote down her cell and home phone numbers and told my mom to tell me to call her at 6:30 tonight.

Well, it was like 7:30 pm or whatever and I was doing dishes and watching Whose Line with my dad when she called.

Julie: Hello?
Erica: Julie?
Julie: Yeah...
Erica: Do you remember me?
Julie: *chuckle*...uhh...I'm gonna need a name...*chuckle*
Erica: Erica.
Julie: Oh...hi.
Erica: Hi.

[awkward silence]

Julie: So...um...what are you doing?

blah blah blah - small talk

Julie: Um...I'm busy right now (I was doing dishes), but I'll call you later. I have your number.

Erica: Ok, bye.

Julie: Bye.

I was so relieved to be off the phone with her but now I'm obligated to call her back and frankly, I don't want to. That was really freaky that after she gave my mom her number, she still went home at looked me up in the phone book and called me! Not only that, but when my mom talked to her, my mom said she was really bouncy and friendly and was surprised because she really used to be very sullen and "Debbie Downer" - she had a lot of problems with the bulimia and everything as well. But she sounded nothing like my mom described on the phone. She wasn't bouncy and friendly that is. She sounded the same as she did in 8th grade when I knew her - but now like a psycho and less like a monotoned downer. So anyways, she's probably just waiting by the phone for me to call her back but I really don't want to.

The thing is, how do you tell someone you don't want to be friends with them or don't want to go out with them. My parents kept suggesting that I just flat out say that I'm not interested in seeing her again or that I should say that since I haven't seen her since 8th grade that she's like a stranger to me, but seriously, those are bullshit answers - how do you think anyone meets anyone? They meet, or meet again in this case, go out, and get to know each other again. I frankly don't want to get to know her because she creeps me out and I don't want what to do. I don't think I'll call her back but then she'll probably call me or I'll see her at the mall it will be awkward.
