Just saw the latest, and OMG LAST!! Harry Potter, in a theatre in the Scottish Highlands that was fancy and everything, including Adult Screening; pity that they haven't invested into their technology since the late 1970ies...
Which means, here come my tuppence:
I... liked it. Not as much as 7.1, but still in a will-buy-dvd way; yet I was not exactly excited about it and don't think I'm gonna donate money to WB by watching it again in the theatre once I'm back home.
A few things that stood out to me, in no particular order, and pros and cons wildly mixed:
- I really, really loved the scene with Olivander. No idea why, but I found it very enthralling, and the way Olivander literally talked to the wands was mesmerising.
- If Alan Rickman ever considers having a Botox injection, or a face lift, he should watch the Snape/Dumbledore pensieve scene before undergoing the treatment. EPIC MAKEUP FAIL.
- Speaking of which, I could have done with a tad less drama - Snape cuddling ded!Lily in his arms was just a bit over the top for me.
- Although I would have preferred to see deranged Lucius (did you, like me, see Jason Isaacs go all 'what about some red eyeliner too' on his makeup artist?) run through the Great Hall, shouting for his boy, I liked the Malfoy exit quite a lot, particularly Narcissa's - holding on to Draco and not casting back One. Single. Glance. That's my girl.
- Ralph Fiennes can act!!! After Amon Göth and Francis Dolarhyde, he finally brought some much-needed evil to Voldemort.
- Surprisingly, the kiss between Ron and Hermione. AAWWW. Whereas Harry/Ginny? Hopeless, really.
- AHAHAHA, the epilogue. The… 'nuff said. Harry and Draco smiling at each other was cute, though. I know, I'm hopeless...
- The Stone Knights that McGonagall enchanted to protect the castle were cool, weren't they? Me wants some of those!
- Were was Kreacher, goddamit?? The only elf I didn't want to strangle immediately in the books, and in the movie!
- Didn't know that Hogwarts = Helm's Deep. Wait, what? It isn't? And those weren't the armies of Isengard attack- oh.
The greatest problem, however, was - quite unsurprisingly - the 3D. Considering my not entirely satisfying encounter with 'Thor', I decided not to give it another try and watched the movie in 2D; yet I still had the impression of watching a 3D movie that just, somehow, lacked the special effects.
But I DO NOT want this! I want a movie, or rather script writers, actors, and directors, that can tell a story WITHOUT relying on super-duper special effects, particularly if they're basing their flick on a book that has a story. I DO NOT want two lines of dialogue that are bereft of any sense because they just serve as an introduction to the next long (and, adding sillyness to boredom, slo-mo) scene that does NOTHING for the story but all for the special effects.
Yet, the Gringotts' scene (Indiana Jones, anyone?), the Fiendfyre scene, and, of course, the completely nonsensical off-the-tower-fighting-whatever scene, just to name those that were particularly annoying, were exactly that - flattened-out 3D effects without any relevance to the story at all. Mind, I'm not complaining about the occasional extra action scene, I know the makers have to cater to many tastes - but it was just too much, and it took time away from scenes I really loved, or from important scenes (were we ever told which one of the twins had died?), scenes which would have been essential to make the story, and not the effects, work for me.
However, not the worst ending to the movie series - BUT NOT TO THE SLASH! Bring it on, people!
*snuggles you all*
