So, I've become this nerd when it comes to anything Spanish. Primarily because I fell in love with a country while I was there for 4 months. I mean, I fell in love with the culture, the people I met, the city I lived in, the attitudes and views on life, etc. It's really amazing how far Spain has come when just over 30 years ago, the most powerful and successful fascist government crumbled. Spain was the scariest place to be between 1945-1953.
Now, legalized gay marriage, contraversial and daring cinema with unconventional characters/plotlines/whatever. Spain is extremely liberal, which I find very sad. Not sad for Spain, but it doesn't say much about us (the States), now does it? A country that has a 30 year old constitution is far more progressed than we are on the bases of equality and tolerance.
But for me, it's more than that. I was able to meet people one night, then get invited out for coffee. We'd get together, and without even really knowing me, they were already invested in what I had to say about my life and my family and friends. A culture that is very family-oriented--no, peer-oriented, where time was designated each day for family time and catching up with buddies. I still talk with some of the people I met there through emails, and they are still as interested as ever. No one was ever pissed off about some stupid thing. There wasn't anything to bitch about, life was good.
Life was good. I could live like that, fuck yeah I can live like that.
