They are bombarding us with ads today trying to get us to approve Proposition 8, and it is a huge expenditure of money to promote nothing more than hate and fear. What are they so afraid of? It's love. It's imperfectly perfect, and refusing to acknowledge it does not make

You know perfectly well that I think people of all sexual orientations have a completely equal right to mistranslate and misappropriate the historical texts of their choice, but that whole quote isn't about romantic love. The word that gets translated as "love" is "caritas" in Latin, which actually means something more like "loving and unselfish benevolence" than "I wanna sex you up." When people aren't being sentimental it's frequently translated as "charity," though not technically the Salvation Army kind. And in this instance you could argue that the ad does in fact advocate that we have charity and benevolence for all other people, but I think the presentation here lends itself more to the "true love is the greatest thing in the world (except a nice MLT) no matter which sorts of bits you prefer" interpretation. And in general this annoys me, because I think the text is in more powerful (and much more Christian, in the positive sense) when understood correctly. Honestly, if you want to find the sexy bits in the Bible, read the Song of Solomon. You know this is true.

You are right, it is true, but I think in both its interpretations it works. I guess it seems like a way of using the staunch-conservative-bible-quoting ammunition against them: look, this is also from there, interpret, mis-translate and mis-appropriate as you will. Honestly, I mostly like the sentiment separate from the source.

As my M pointed out, this campaign could have been run in such a way as to make it clear that passing the proposition is about furthering discrimination. Unfortunately, the message is dragged all over the place - religion, education, marriage, etc.

And Song of Solomon is sexy, but not quite as applicable. But you are right.

Hmm, well, I do not know Latin, so I will take g_f's word on the inaccuracy of the translation. But I thought it was a lovely video/advertisement all the same. I certainly hope it works and the proposition fails!

Hey! I know people in this video! (They're actors from the Caltech community.) I was just watching the video while doing other things and suddenly someone I knew was on the screen! It was very disconcerting.

But the video was nice, if mistranslated(and a little too Christian for my tastes).
