Kittens are a handful. DH did NOT want a kitten (too energetic and too easy to hurt if he rolled over on it while sleeping) so we adopted adult cats (the first set of brothers were about 14 months when we got them, the 2nd set of brothers (see icon) were just over 2, and the little girl was supposed to be a year ... we think she was actually about 9 months). We figure that adults are harder to place ... especially pairs and we prefer them a little older and less frantic. Even the 9 month was a LOT less trouble than a normal 8 week kitten. We've had her for a year and she is still finding new and interesting things to do (and encouraging the boys to do so as well).

When we got a pet as a child, the only one that was for a specific person was for my sister and she was maybe 12 when we got the kitten. She was responsible for certain portions of the kitten/cat care while she was at home and the cat stayed with the family when she went to college (and slept with my sister on visits). The dog was a family dog and while it was my responsibility to take her for walks when I was old enough ... or feed her, my Mom was NOT going to let the dog suffer if I flaked out.
