It's a rant and I just don't care.

I was going to type this as a cute letter to a customer formatted entry, but then I decided I'm just to tired to give a rat's ass if it's cute or not.  I'll get flamed for what I'm about to say anyway, but I just can't get up the energy to give a damn about it.  In just 5 years we'll be out of the hell-hole that South Florida has become, and then I ( Read more... )

I live in southern New Mexico and have customers like that all the time. If they're polite to me, I will go out of my way to help them and figure out what they need/want depsite the langage barrier. Bt if they want to be assholes about it, I'll bring it right back.

I had one guy come in, speaking Spanish, and I kept trying to tell him I did not speak spanish, I didn't know what he was saying. He got red faced and screamed, "WHY NOT?!" I looked at him, blinked and said, "Because last I knew, the mexican border was about 90 miles that way!"

Or the ones I KNOW speak english(I've heard them)and they come up to me and speak spanish like they know no english. They'll say something in spanish, I'll look at them with the blank stare, they ask again in spanish and I say some random phrase in french. They look at me like I've got two heads and they have no idea what I'm talking about. I just smile and move on to the next customer. You'd be surprised how fast they can speak english after that.

(southern New Mexico? Used to live there m'self-used to live in Alamogordo from '89-'95)

I've seen that a few times while shopping here in Tennessee-a Spanish speaking person gets all upset that the cashier doesn't know Spanish and pitches a fit.

I miss the city :) Heck I missed being about a mile or so from the library and could hoof it.

Dad was stationed @ Holloman with the MOBSS.

As a fellow South Floridian & a part-time cashier at a grocery store, I TOTALLY feel your pain. Some of my biggest pet peeves are WIC Cards (with two different signatures on the card & the check, but we take them anyways) and Express (10 items or less, muchachos)!

v_v Bleh. People shouldn't take out their lack of English on an American. I understand English isn't the official national language, but seriously... it's not Spanish, either!

It's the state language in Arizona!

I don't mind if someone can't speak English, as long as they are polite and understanding that it may take a while to figure out what we're trying to figure out, and they are as helpful as they can be.

An asshole is an asshole, though, regardless of their native tongue.

I didn't know there could be state languages... huh.

I'll do what I can for anyone who is nice, and I'll meet policy for anyone else.

It's just really stupid to be an ass because someone doesn't speak a language foreign to them and/or the country you're both in.

So what if it's not the official national language? Not everything has to be in writing. Everyone knows that English is the dominant language of the United States. The Constitution is written in English (albeit early 19th Century English). Laws are written in English. Making a law that English is the official language is like putting warning labels on hairdriers saying not to use them in the bathtub.

I know EXACTLY what you mean.
This is not Mexico, and I know a lot of people are going to get upset but you know what, this is America and the language that is most widely spoken here is English.
People who make no effort to learn it really piss me off, & they live here! They've lived here for years and they don't learn it WTF?!

Some of them do speak English, but they think that you should cater to them and speak spanish to them.
Uh No.

i completely agree.

i wouldn't go to live in another country without trying to learn THEIR language. how arrogant do you have to be to just EXPECT everyone to cater to you and what you speak?! and if you don't speak the language, then you bring someone with you who does.

Not everyone that speaks Spanish is Mexican. I wish everyone would get that through their heads. There are SEVERAL countries that speak spanish like: Spain, Brazil (some parts), Guatemala, Ecuador, etc.

IAWTC It's understandable to be frustrated but being that I am mexican I can't help but feel offended at most of these comments.

After being called that I think I'd have slammed the window in his face too.

The ONLY time I catered to a Spanish-speaking customer was when her English speaking friend was there to help me help her. The one who couldn't speak English had just moved here and was trying to learn, was in an ESL class. Her English speaking friend would translate between the two of us, and the Spanish speaking lady looked so very happy when I was able to reply in her language. ^_^

But I hear you on the ones who refuse to even try or start cursing you out.
