Apparently, some self-proclaimed "boob nazis" (parents who advocate breast-feeding over formula feeding) have been upset by a onesie that Target carries that says "Formula 4 Success" on the front with a picture of a bottle. They've taken to "stashing" the onesies around at various places on the salesfloor (camping, men's basics, etc ( Read more... )

Thing is though, THOUSANDS of letters have been written to corp target asking them to explain, pull, or have a breastfeeding onesie available as well.
All that is being returned is some generic "thanks for emailing/writing us" saying nothing about the matter at hand.

Nobody likes working retail, and we certainly don't want to make anyone's job harder, however when THOUSANDS of letters have been returned with no actual acknowledgement regarding the issue, it's time for passive tactics to get target's attention.

by doing this (and yes, i'm sorry....making target worker's jobs harder) target corp might sit up and pay attention to the letters.

We just want EQUAL rep regarding the issue. either put out a onesie with "breastfeeding rules" on it (or whatever) or pull the formula one.

It's like walking into target and seeing a onesie saying
"Crackers are stupid" or something equally offensive. can you imagine if they had a shirt that said "I hate niggers"??

Just because it's not a big issue for non-parents, doesn't mean it isn't for other people. I personally find it VERY offensive.
Its fine if people want to formula feed, it really is. I don't care.
What I DO care about is formula propaganda, misinformation EVERYWHERE, and things like this onesie and free formula shit being given away with every hospital birth leaving moms thinking formula is "natural" and "healthy" because it's NOT.
It's a viable alternative, yes. but it's a alternative.

If target was to issue a "sorry we pissed off the breastfeeding people, next run we will do a "breast is best" shirt" we'd be totally happy with that.

Thing is, they won't.

If it pisses you off, take your money elsewhere. That'll make 'em notice. :P

yeah, the hispanic day of boycotting really showed retail.
They laughed all the way...

Boycotts work much better in the long term. A day won't do crap.

Yeah, and they're laughing at your "protest." I've worked in retail a long time and corporate is not going to care about shit being moved around their stores by annoying customers.

so if you feel boycotting a product and depriving a store of money won't work, just fucking with the employees will?

you have your understanding of corporate priorities WAY scrambled

Actually, once I wrote to Target complaining that their wedding registry had fixed "bride" and "groom" registration; I pointed out that gay marriages aren't legal, but they're still done. I got an e-mail back that agreed with me and they said they were working on it.

A while later, I checked, and they'd fixed it; you could have two brides or two grooms listed; I squeed. So sometimes they do listen.

Yay, I like hearing that my company isn't completely evil!

The two brides/two grooms thing is really important, to my mind. Of course they listened.

This bottle onesie kerfuffle is just silly. People need to get over themselves.

They listened because you were worth listening to. Militant boobnazis though ...

Wedding registries offering two grooms and two brides = more money. People not liking a $10 onsie? Not so much. It's all about the money.

It won't work, though. That's the thing. The employees probably won't think a thing of it - they'll just toss it into the carts with the rest of their reshop and go on their merry way. They won't even tell a manager. And if a manager were to see it, I'm sure that they wouldn't say anything to corporate - I've seen some of their emails back and forth.

We're already tired at the end of the night and just want to go home - do you really think that we're going to sit there and fill out some paperwork for corporate because of a protest that most people don't understand?

Hey man, I worked at barnes and noble and people would come in at 10min to close (And we wern't allowed to make speaker announcements, just walk around and TELL them face to face) and after being told about 9 times we were closing would leave with about 2 baskets of books laying in their wake on the opposite side of the store.
Like they TRIED to do it on purpose!

It sucks, I know.

And they ARE paying attention, otherwise they wouldn't be posting guards to watch the displays!

Yeah, if my zone is getting fucked with, I make sure to watch too. But I honestly doubt that they notice that it's a protest against formula feeding. Because then, why stop at the onesies? Why not hide the bottles? Or the formula in general?

Trust me, it isn't going to get Target to stop selling them. It just pisses off the workers in some of the stores. From experience, Infants is one of the most fucked-with departments. (Mostly because parents let their toddlers run around and pull stuff off of racks or they think that being pregnant means that they can toss shit on the ground.)

Thats what I was trying to express in my comment earlier.
I think that while i'm probably a tad more open minded that most of the so called boob_nazis.

We don't CARE if you want to formula feed. It's a choice.
What we care about is all the misinformation and propaganda that tells especially new nervous ill-educated moms that formula is normal.

If they had both a breastfeeding and a formula shirt, We would bitch and let it lie. We certainly wouldn't be that upset.

It's the fact it's ONLY formula, and we arn't getting ANY response from target about the issue.

We realize that people have a choice, and that a good number (probably more than breastfeeding for sure) choose to formula feed at some point.
What we don't like is the fact that target has produced ONLY a formula supportive shirt.

I dunno about you in retail, but all my jobs in retail I would NEVER be allowed to hover around a single display. I'd be fired for that!
I truely think that the higher ups in the stores are requesting "guards" on those shirts.

And bottles are used by non-formula feeding moms.
I have lots and lots of bottles, as well as a pump. I work full time :)
