The "alt-horror" film The House of the Dead, directed by Ti West, makes its Atlanta theatrical debut (two weeks after coming out on DVD, actually) from Feb. 15-21 at Georgia State University's Cinefest.
It's fun! I've been hearing about it since late summer/early fall, and was glad it finally opened.
There seems to be a new wave of
interesting, low-budget horror films, like the $107 million
Paranormal Activity. Last October Andrew O'Hehir of Salon did a story about those and other recent under-the-radar frightfests (along with Drag Me To Hell, which was more big-budgeted and mainstream - and really fun). If I had an infinite amount of time -- and maybe a soundproof video-watching lair out of consideration of my wife and daughter - I'd load up Netflix with the likes of [REC], Ti West's Trigger Man; Larry Fessenden's I Can See You and Wendigo; Dark Mirror; Dog Soldiers, the first film from Neil Marshall (director of The Descent and the upcoming Centurion); Rogue (from the director of
Wolf Creek); and Murder Party. (Note: I mentioned some of these in one of my
13 Days of Halloween pieces from last year).
I don't have any ambitions to make a film myself. But if I did, it would be some kind of tightly-written horror/suspense film with a small cast and limited number of sets/ locations. Hmmm, I do know at least one ingenious gore effects expert... Nah.
