Curt's Read-Bag: Maybe cool novels coming out 2009

Jan 11, 2009 21:12

Beat the Reaper - Josh Bazell (Jan. 7) "Hot" thriller already w/movie deal
The Steel Remains - Richard K. Morgan (Jan. 20) Talented 'post-cyberpunk' sci fi novelist takes on the fantasy genre.
Drood - Dan Simmons (Feb.9) Long historical thriller about... Charles Dickens?
Fool - Christopher Moore (Feb. 10 ) Comic/revisionist take on 'King Lear' by someone I've never read but people on my Flist adore.
The Age of Orphans - Laleh Khadivi (March 3) Award-winner from Emory University
The King James Conspiracy - Phillip DePoy (May 12) Fun-sounding historical thriller from a close personal friend of mine
Sunnyside - Glen David Gold (May 5) Odd-sounding early 20th century novel -- with Charlie Chaplin as a main character -- from the author of the awesome 'Carter Beats the Devil.'
The City & the City - China Mieville (May 26) The latest from a horror/sci fi/fantasy/mystery writer whose work I obsess over. Conveniently coming out right before my birthday.

I would not be surprised if these are delayed, but I hope not:
Blood’s a Rover - James Ellroy (Sep. 8) Long-awaited final novel in the 'Underworld USA' trilogy from the author of 'LA Confidential'
A Dance With Dragons - George R.R. Martin (Oct. 27) Fifth book in sprawling, oft-delayed fantasy epic (the first three books of which are insanely great)
Supposedly Martin Amis, Margaret Atwood, Nick Hornby, William Boyd and John Irving will have new ones before the end of the year (at least in the U.K.)
