Moves that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than:

1. Any of the Brendan Fraser Mummy films
2. Any National Treasure film
3. The Da Vinci Code
4. George Lucas’s first two Star Wars prequels
5. Any Harrison Ford film since Air Force One
6. Live Free or Die Hard

With that in mind, here’s my review of Indiana Jones and theRead more... )

It's worse than Revenge of the Sith? That's not a good sign...

Bear in mind that I like Revenge of the Sith.

Revenge of the Sith was definitely the best of the prequels, which are almost OK movies if you don't compare them to the originals.

I totally get what you're saying about how Lucas needs Spielberg. Lucas seems to have really lost touch with how real people behave, it's almost impossible to believe the guy who did American Graffittititititi (sp?) was responsible for the "sand" speech from "Attack of the Clones." Recently I saw a list of all the movies Spielberg has done, and it was pretty amazing. "Hook" was the only totally crappy one of the bunch, the rest ranged from flawed but interesting to goddamned excellent. He is all about keeping you interested and engaged, while Lucas' stuff has become really stilted and lifeless.

Oh, and I'm kinda bitter I missed the recent KOTH LA show. I saw them way back in like 1995 or something. Jeneane Garafalo was in line in front of us, and it was like six months before she became ubiquitous in all those '90s movies she did. I remember this tiny, chubbyish, adorable blonde(!), going up to the box office and saying, "Garafalo?" I tapped her shoulder and said, "I loved you on the Ben Stiller Show," and she smiled like she was scared I was going to beat her up, and ran away.

I got my head crushed, too. A magic night.

I saw them live twice in 2000, and the bits with the Head Crusher were quite amusing. It *does* work. I was surprised at the lack of their cop sketches on YouTube as well. I could only find this one:

They're at the very end, obviously. :) I liked all those characters mentioned, but one of my favorites you neglected was "Sharisse", the white trash woman. Bruce played her little "lover man." Remember those?

My husband's a big fan of TinTin, so he's leery of it being on film. The animated episodes are pretty neat though, so it might be good.

I was planning on doing the cop sketch where they "chase" the convicts at the diner, eating and paying as fast as possible -- but it wasn't to be found.

I don't remember 'Sharisse,' but I'm sure it would come back to me instantly if I saw it.

Now THAT sketch was a classic one. Trying to get the attention of the waitress first. Stopping for gas. Then finally, crossing the border. Ah, good stuff.

So,how was Mark?

it seems like the recipe of a good Indiana Jones film would be 1 part Nazis and 1 part biblical artifact; the Soviet army does a pretty good job of replacing the Nazis, but the other ingredient...

I believe Spielberg said that, after 'Schindler's List,' he'd never do a film in which Nazis were villains (at least not 'light-hearted' villains a la the Raiders films).

I saw the Indy film last night and was underwhelmed. In particular, I thought the score fell flat. Where were the new recognizable motifs that were such a big part of the other films? Hell, even the Cross of Coronado in the prologue of Last Crusade had its own theme. Was there a skull theme? Or a commie theme? Or a Mutt theme? I couldn't pick up on them if they were there.

The first Act was decent, and the rest sort of left me deflated. I didn't hate it, but it felt like the spark that makes Indy films so much fun was missing.
