The US v. Slovenia game just about wrecked me, you guys. I was late getting back from morning coffee and venting with Lint and an off-line colleague, and Slovenia scored just before I got Univision up and running. Down one immediately--though as one commenter noted, at least it wasn't in the first 4 minutes (we held out 9 whole minutes more). *wry* So, it will surprise no student of US history that we love to paint ourselves as the underdog, but, please Team USA: stop making yourselves the underdogs. Creating problems so you can solve them in a spectacular manner is folly (please also note that it has not worked in warfare, either), and my stress levels are high enough without you spicing up the game with erratic foolishness until you settle down to actually play. Hugs, Mundi. PS. Please also win sometime, it would make me happy.
Then another point down, and halftime, and then the US goals...and the threats, and the almost-goals, and the one that was disallowed for offsides when we weren't while several of our players appeared to be enjoying intimate relations with the Slovenia's defenders (seriously, I've seen less affectionate embraces in weddings), and Slovenia increasingly tossing our boys to the ground, culminating in one guy taking out Donovan for maybe 10 seconds but taking himself out of the game permanently. I've not had this many highs and lows watching a match for years. And the group is still wide open. *bites fingers*
Also, in possibly the most hilarious collision of my two separate obsessions EVER, did anyone else see the footage of the US fan in the stadium who was wearing one of those Captain America hoodies? Minute 35 of the second half. He was up for a second, I swear. Blew my mind. IT'S NEVER JUST YOU.
