I think the most important part of this evening is to look at how far we have come. Our nation's bitter fight for independence and acceptance in the global community. After that, close to a century under the oppressive yoke of slavery. Then, another hundred years of second-class citizenship before achieving equal rights under the law. This was followed by four decades of having to fight, tooth and nail, for every advancement gained...and fighting even harder to keep the ground we'd taken.
And now, on this beautiful November morning, history has been made. It gives me great pride to stand before you today, the first black man to be elected President of the Confederate States of America.
