I can't sleep...

Yesterday was my 18th birthday, and I feel like I look 15... Is there anything I can do to my hair to make me look more mature besides straightening it?

Seriously, you're beautiful so please don't think I'm bashing your personal style BUT... you and I dress in a very similar way with the jeans and the t's under hoodies and I find that I have to make a really conscious effort to wear SOMETHING a little more mature (either some hot shoes or a really sophisticated necklace or a sexy shirt or even intense eye makeup) to balance out the hair and the fact that I'm 22 with the face of a 16 year old.

Sometimes I find that if I pick shoes or accessories that are even a little old for my age it helps balance out the stuff I can't help like my face & my curls. My trick is to shop at antique stores and department stores for stuff that's really unique and inexpensive, and most importantly classic/timeless since I know that girls my age are still shopping at Claire's. I'm not saying that you should raid grandma's closet, but pick a few things that will catch people's attention.

My philosophy is that big curly hair is an attention getter, so if you wear something else that grabs people's attention also, you're making your WHOLE LOOK eye-catching and you almost force people's eye not to settle just on your head. You can either make your hair say "HEY GUYS I'VE GOT CURLY HAIR" or make your whole outfit say "I CAN PULL OFF A CRAZY BRACELET OR BIG HAIR OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME BECAUSE I'M SO CONFIDENT!"

Another option would be to try pinning your hair up and just out of your face in different ways with some really hot clips or pins.

Or just don't worry because you're beautiful and if people think you look like a kid, that's tough and makes THEM look stupid, not you.

Thank you for the advice! I currently have no money, so I can't buy any new clothing or accessories. But I your advice makes complete sense. Most of my clothes I've had since 8th grade-last year... Which is probably part of the reason I look so young. But I'm determined to get a job over the summer and go shopping for some more mature clothes and accessories.

Seriously, I'm always broke so I can tell you for sure that you don't need to go overboard. Definitely get a few things that make you feel good and that aren't too trendy so they'll last you forever. A comfy pair of black heels and a few pieces of simple costume jewelry will never go out of style. I think it's important to still be yourself and wear what makes you comfortable, but adding a little jazz to what you already own & love will make you feel even better.
