I'd definitely try the no poo method, and get away from most silicones. They advocate gel, but I've always found I like creamy stylers better.
My hair looks similar to yours so my routine might work for you( but not it's full like that anymore - damn being 31!). Right now I'm using a combination of Jessicurl's Too Shea and Nature's Gate Jojoba conditioner (the Too Shea is expensive, and this cuts it well). After I rinse out the conditioner I rake through Jessicurl Aloeba as a leave in, then AG Hair Cosmetics re:Coil. I scrunch with AG's Mousse Gel.
After that I either put it up gently in a towel (so it's piled on top of my head, not wound up in the towel), or scrunch dry it with a towel.
Oh! And I use whatever I have lying around for conditioner-washing, I've heard v05 makes some good conditioners for this. And I'm sure you know to never brush your hair when dry - do it when your hair is full of conditioner, preferably with your fingers or a wide tooth comb/pick.
