Some Help To Tame Thick Curly Hair

Apr 13, 2007 09:52

I'm new to here, and I got recommended here by the community madradhair when trying to get advice over there. They said this community would be able to help me.

I've had thick curly hair all my life, and I've finally attempting to grow it out hoping that would calm it, but I've had no such luck. My hair when wet is past my shoulders, but as soon as it dries, it poofs up and becomes completely unmanagable. I'd love to wear my hair down, or even figure out something to do for prom with it, but I'm at a bit of a rut here.

I've tried a bunch of different methods to tackling it, and nothing really seems to work. I've been told to either straight perm or layer my hair, but I'm fearing either of those will just make the situation worse.

I don't want to cut it, because the shorter it is, the worse is it to handle. And I don't know if it makes any difference, but I've never dyed or chemically treated my hair in any way.

Apologies for the not so great pictures, they're the most recent I have.

An example of how my hair poofs out over the course of the day. I don't even have to touch it to do this anymore. I have to pull it back or the poof is uncontrollable.

This is a much older picture, but this is what happens when I just leave it to dry. Since my hair is much thicker and longer now, it normally just poofs out into a pyramid shape.

Any advice on how to manage my hair on a day to day basis, or even something I could do with it for prom would be much appreciated. Thanks.
