Hello! I have just joined, so I wanted to both introduce myself and ask your advice. While I'd never heard of the curly girls method, I have used many of the techniques for several years. I have a few issues with my hair that I haven't been able to reconcile. I was hoping perhaps you had some wisdom to share.

To begin, I suppose its best I explain ( Read more... )

When I first started the CG method, I tried to do it like the book said, but my hair never got out of the greasy stage and my flakes came back full force. Then someone mentioned some rinses, and they basically changed my hair life as I know it. I'm not 100% why this works to not only clean your hair gently but also get rid of flakes, but it does. Here's what I've done for nearly 3 years now:

Start with a Baking Soda Rinse (1 Tbsp baking soda mixed in with 1 Cup of hot water, or warm if you can't take hot). Pour it onto your head and massage it into your scalp with the pads of your fingers. Let it sit for a few seconds, and then rinse it out.

Follow with an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse (1 Tbsp ACV and 1 Cup warm water). Do the same as with the BSR, but let it sit for at least 30 seconds. Typically I pour that on and then shave my underarms or cleanse my face or something. Then rinse it out.

Finish with conditioner, like in the book. First spread it on your palms and the inward parts of your fingers and go over the canopy of your hair (the part that the sun shines on). Then get more conditioner and rub your palms together, and make sure your fingers also get coated with it. Then comb your hair with your conditioner-covered fingers. If you have any tangles (and you'll come to find that you won't have many--I have a convertible and still rarely any tangles!), this is when to get them out. If you have long hair, you'll also want to be sure to scrunch the ends of your hair with conditioner because ends tend to be dryer than the rest of the hair. Let that sit for a few minutes, perhaps while you shave your legs or wash your body. Rinse it out, but not all of it. Over time you'll find what amount is right for you. Also, we girls on this community have found that rinsing with our heads upside-down helps give us a lot more volume.

When you get out of the shower, scrunch your hair with your towel, being careful not to rub it. Then get some gel or mousse, whichever works best for your hair, spread it around your palms and fingers, and scrunch your hair with your head upside-down (again, adding volume). Then take a tiny bit more gel, rub it in your palms, and gently go over your canopy one more time.

Air dry your hair for the best results, or if you don't like to go around with wet hair, blow it dry with a diffuser.

And voila! After just a few days, you should have flake-free, healthy, virtually frizz-free, and CURLY hair! (And yes, describing my method takes much longer than actually doing it. ;o) )
