As the evening continued moving slowly into night, David grew bored and, when David was bored he became hungry. His stomach rumbled under the hand that tried to muffle it. He tapped his stomach listening to the hollow sound from within. His fingers, slender and coal colored, traced up his navel, counting the seconds it took until the next eruption of growls.
One... Two... Thr--
His stomach growled again. He groaned and rolled over, out of his hammock and let his body land on the ground with a hard thud. He closed his eyes, tasting the bitter dirt. “Stupid hunger,” he said, muffled through green blades of grass.
He tried to recall his last meal as he lay there in the grass looking like a lump of coal. It had to have been a dog... yeah. The boy smiled as he recalled the flavor, tangy and sweet. He didn’t know what kind of dog exactly but, he remembered how the blood gushed from the meat of the muscles as he bit in. The skin was rough, and he was sure the thing had mange but, from his experience disease made the meat taste sweeter. How long ago was this? He counted backwards in his head, coming to the conclusion that it had to have been more than a week ago.
It was the boy I was after... yeah, thats right, and that was a Friday because he was walking home from school. It was... four days ago? The realization hit him like a rock.
“It feels like friggin’ ever!” He rolled onto his back and jumped up. He started to walk towards the town, took a running start and leapt into the air. He soared a good five feet before landing head first into the grass, where he then, on contact, dispersed into shadow.
Some leaves rustled in the forest, but other than that all was quiet and nothing moved. Not at all.
