Astoria, Oregon - August 4,2005
'My Day in Astoria, Oregon'
Then we headed into Downtown Astoria....
Location 4: Historic Flavel House Museum
What is it?: Well in reality it's a historical monument built for General Flavel, but in the movie they portrayed it as being the place where Mikey's dad, Mr. Walsh, worked. It's the scene where the goonies are riding there bikes past and as Mr. Walsh is lowering the flag from the flag post he waves back at them.
Where is it?: The Flavel House is located on 8th and Duane. Luckily, there are signs to take to right to it since its a historical monument.
A closer shot where you can see the flag pole on the right. Just a note, you can take a tour of this house. It costs money, but I'd bet it'd be great. We didn't go in, but you can easily find tourist info about the house. It's a big attraction to Astoria, and pretty historically important.
Speaking of the flag pole, theres a plaque they had about it. Apparently it's real important. Kinda changes my thoughts when I see that part in the movie. It's a real short shot, but it means just a little more to me now.
Location 5: Clatsop County Jail
What is it?: The jail house the Fratelli's break out of at the very start of the film. It still looks the same after all these years!
Where is it?:Right across the street from the Flavel House! Just across Duane Street. This most likely will also be on tourist maps, too.
Location 6: Cannon Beach, Oregon
What is it?: After the Fratelli's escape from jail, they end up in a car race across a beach. This is the beach it was filmed on, with the trademark Haystack Rock.
Where is it?: Haystack Rock is actually located in Cannon Beach, a little tourist town just south of Astoria. It's all in the same general area. It's about a 45 minute drive from one to the other. You'll see signs for it, since it's a landmark.
As you can see, the ocean was real misty/cloudy that day. In the film, it's a bright sunshine-y day on Cannon Beach.
It's just so classic.
For the rest of my day in Astoria, my mom and I visited a cute little shop called the Astoria Trading Comp. It's located just at the end of 12th street. Right at the end of the street at the water front. It's a small little trinket shop with a real nice owner. We told her we were looking for Goonies stuff and she said she only had one shirt left (one funny one with Mama on it, heh). So we were just looking around, and then I noticed a real cool shirt hanging above that looked like something I wanted to buy. So I turned it around to take a look. Then I noticed it was signed. I thought it was a sports team at first, but then I noticed one of the names. Sean Astin. Then as I looked at all the others it came to me all at once that it was signed by the Goonies themselves. I frantically called my mother over and she immediately took a picture of me holding it...
I know for sure Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Keri Green, Josh Brolin, and Steve Antin (Troy) but the others I couldn't read. She said both Sean and Jeff Cohen (Chunk) had been in that store earlier in the summer for the 20th anniversary. She also said they are for sure planning a 25th anniversary. Leave it to those wonderful Astoria natives to be up to date.
The owner also said if it wasn't hanging so high, she would've taken it down and let me put it on. But it was so cool just to get to see it. And touch Sean's autograph.
So then since she didn't have much Goonies stuff (and realized we were hardcore Goonies fans) she directed us to the Lunar Boy Gallery on 1133 Commercial Street (basically Highway 30). There they had a selection of Goonies shirts. My mom bought my sister and I each one and I got a sticker that says 'I <3 Chunk'. So thats the only place in Astoria that I know of that carries and Goonies merchandise.
Then I picked up my 50 cent copy of the
The Daily Astorian - the local paper - in hopes of someday having Sean sign it. Ha, yeah right. But a girl can dream, no?
I believe that's the end of my Goonies festivities. Any questions, feel free to ask. I love talking about this!
THE END.
*WARNING: HUGE PICTURES AND LOTS OF READING*
There are actually many more places I still yet need to see. So I'm totally planning on going to the 25th anniversary in 2010. I'll totally be there.
I need to rest now. I hope you've all enjoyed this!! Have a good one.
