So Kristen and I are taking a class over the summer. For our majors we both need two "WAC" (Writing-Intensive) classes: One in our major and one in a different field. So we're taking an English one. And I love language arts so I thought it would be fine, just lots of writing or whatever. The name of the course is something really broad like "Literary Concepts"

We're analyzing poetry.

It's way too strong of a statement to say that I hate poetry. I don't hate it. But there is a reason that I don't read poetry and that's because I don't understand it. And I don't really care to.

I consider myself an intelligent person, and it's likely that I am capable of understanding the poems we're presented with... But the people in this class seem to really know what they're talking about. All the things they mention I just start to understand about 15 minutes after they've finished discussing it.

On Monday, the first day, the professor asked us a few questions to answer and then bring in the next day about our interpretation of the first stanza. So I go home, work from 3-11 and then jot down this paragraph answering the questions. I come in the next day and see that many of the other students wrote PAGES and some of them actually typed their reponses in seemingly ESSAY form... I thought it was just a little 'response' kind of ordeal. I was clearly wrong. Not to mention I was late for the first 2 days of class.

Not getting off on the best foot, I'd say.

Well anyway, this should be an interesting month and a half I have before me. I have the class every day of the week from 9:50-11:30am. Tomorrow we have to get in groups and discuss a new poem. I must say, I do feel bad for my groupmates, I'm sure my input will be something like "Wow did you guys notice how the exclamation point suggests excitement???!!!" Riight.

Aside from work, there really isn't anything else to share. :) bye now
