This morning we celebrated our Harvest Thanksgiving at church. Originally one of the regular preachers and I were going to do this between us, but he realised he would be off-island, so I did the whole service. Here are the gifts people brought, which will go to Food Bank;
We sang traditional Harvest hymns including 'We Plough the Fields and Scatter' and 'For the Fruits of All Creation'. We used part of the creation story, and then the wedding at Canaan, to talk about the importance of food and drink all through the Bible - and then I set the congregation the task of finding all the following Bible verses listed on a 70yr old type written document a friend had given me;
Judges 5; 25. Jeremiah 6; 20. 1st Samuel 14; 25. Jeremiah 17; 11. 1st Samuel 30; 12.
Nahum 3; 12. 2nd Number 17; 8. 1st Kings 4;22. 2 Chronicles 9; 9. Leviticus 2: 13. Amos 4: 5. and Judges 4:19.
And to allow you to look them up if you want, but save you the bother otherwise, I have put the actual verses behind the cut;
Here are not just the verses - but the amounts of each you would need -
1/2lb Judges 5; 25 - she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.
1/2lb Jeremiah 6; 20 - the sweet cane from a far country (sugar)
1 tablespoon 1st Samuel 14; 25 - there was honey on the ground.
3 x Jeremiah 17; 11 - As the partridge sitteth on eggs
1/2lb 1st Samuel 30; 12 - two clusters of raisins
1/2lb Nahum 3; 12 (chopped) - All your fortresses are like fig trees with first-ripe figs
2oz Number2 17; 8 - it bore ripe almonds.
1lb 1st Kings 4;22 - thirty cors of fine flour,
To taste 2nd Chronicles 9; 9 - very great quantity of spices,
Pinch of Leviticus 2: 13 - You shall season all your cereal offerings with salt;
1 teaspoon Amos 4: 5 - that which is leavened, (we took this as baking powder!)
3 tablespoons Judges 4:19 - So she opened a skin of milk
I made sure there were 2 copies of the King James translation available as for Judges 5; 25, and Jeremiah 17; 11, the more recent translations don't quite work, but otherwise everyone was able to look them up in the pew bibles. (We still use the old terminology even though we have never had pews in the current building!)
NYK2 wrote the answers on the flip chart as they were found and read out - and then we asked what you might make from all of those things put together.
The answer, of course, is a Bible Cake!
Here is the one I made to make sure the recipe works, and then took to church with me for everyone to share -
And this is what the slice I have just had with coffee looks like;
The general opinion was that it was very good!
