Holiday Update.

Quick travel update.

This was the view from our hotel window in York;

And this is the view from our hotel window in Inverness -

When we were in York we went to the National Railway Museum as it was a long time since we had last been there.

Here are pics of S2C with two of his all-time favourite trains -

Mallard, and The Duchess of Hamilton.

The train journey up from York to Inverness was smooth and with amazing views from the window. It was almost 9pm when we got here, though, but there was a very nice dinner awaiting us.

It was an early start this morning - S2C was sort of happy that there was both cranberry juice and haggis available at breakfast, but still not fully human until after lunch!

We saw a small line that runs between northern villages and was officially closed in 1968, but is kept open by volunteers. This was very scenic, but they are keeping it open with 65-year-old Diesel Multiple Units, which were the last rolling stock - but were very noisy and smelled heavily of diesel. Kudos, though to the volunteers.

And we had lunch in a cafe made from a couple of carriages; excellent soup, sandwiches - and a strawberry and cream tart each, with strawberries on the top that must have weighed at least an ounce each.

This afternoon we were on a preserved steam railway - with the main station in Aviemore they clearly are much better financed!

When we arrived in our hotel room last night I vaguely remember seeing a 'Do not feed the sea gulls' notice.

When I made us a cup of coffee when we returned late afternoon it made sense - this was the view out the window...!

And tomorrow we are travelling on the train from Inverness across to the other side of the country at Kyle of Lochalsh. There is also going to be a visit to a Famously Scenic Castle, and then driving over the Road Bridge to Skye in time for dinner!
