Messy Church!

WE were back at Messy Church today! It is our first since last autumn due to worries about covid levels. There were fewer children than usual, at least two families were missing because of illness, but then that allowed for less crowding and better air-flow - especially as there were two outdoor activities and only four indoor ones.

As tomorrow is Palm Sunday we had a mix of palm leaves, donkeys - and Easter rabbits and chickens! There are some pictures under the cut -

I made some orange biscuits in the shape of donkeys, and a few egg shapes as well, made coloured royal icings and took along the assorted sprinkles -

There were chickens emerging from eggs -

And then Easter Bunny headbands -

Also palm fronds made by drawing around their own hands, like the ones I made for Home Church last Palm Sunday - you can see some here on the table where the biscuit icing was drying -

Someone has eaten the head of one of their donkeys...

Also a palm hunt! I printed a basic palm leaf shape on a dozen sheets of different coloured paper, numbered each one, and then pinned them up both inside the church and around the grounds, then gave each child a question sheet asking such things as 'what colour is number 5?' and 'what is written on number 7?' and so on. If you got all the questions right you got a small bag of mini eggs. And a lovely young man who is a sports instructor was running 'pass the egg' races in the grounds, using a rugby ball.

Even the dads like to join in sometimes -

The story was of Dave the Donkey who carried Jesus into Jerusalem.

We had a real party atmosphere for the food as it was, slightly delayed, our 10th Messy Church birthday - and someone had given us some party hats, and party paper cups and plates -

The young man running games outdoors was actually one of the children at that first Messy Church!

As it was a birthday, there was a birthday cake - made by B's mum Viv -

And they decided I should blow out the candles! So here is a very unflattering picture of me doing just that!
