Sark - the island, not the state of being!

Sark is another Channel Island less than an hour by sea from Guernsey, and D-d visited it one Sunday a few weeks ago. It is renowned for having no cars or motorbikes, only tractors are allowed - which leads to some interesting use of tractors...

This is the 'bus' that you can use to get from the harbour up to the village if you don't fancy the uphill walk -

The population of the whole island is only about 600 people, although they do get visitors in the summer. However the result is that they don't need a terribly big bank -

Or, it seems, terribly big shops...

Although the post office looks a little bigger, and they have a golden post box as one of their population of 600 actually won an olympic gold medal - he was a member of the UK Three Day Eventing team.

This is just a view from a path she took as she walked along the clifftop -

The land on the horizon is Guernsey -D-d can see Sark from her window.

Sark is actually almost two islands - 'Little Sark' is only joined to the rest of it by a narrow isthmus called La Coupée -

She walked over to Little Sark and all around it before heading back to the rest of Sark - she says she did get a bit lost at one point and wandered around having lost the path, but then spotted the village in the distance and so made her way back to it.

The place was, she said, a bit odd feeling - and when she got back to the small eatery you can see beside the small bank, she discovered it had closed for lunch...

Anyway - this is the seat of government of Sark -

Honestly. That is where the Chief Pleas meet. For more information about Sark and its political system look here on Wiki.

This is the church and war memorial -

Sark has 17, yes seventeen, names on its memorial of soldiers killed in WW1 - and one who was killed in WW2. Sark, like the other Channel Islands, was occupied by the German Army during WW2.

And a final picture for this post returns to the ways in which tractors are used -

Neither D-d nor I have any idea what the doctor keeps in the red box!

I have some more pictures of Sark which will appeal to my friends who also, like me, enjoy a good gateway - or an interesting garden. But I will leave them for now and post them in a day or two.
